Because rape is never the victim's fault.
Not if she was drunk. Not if she was naked. Not if she was wearing a miniskirt or a veil. Not if she was a sex worker. Not if the authorities didn't believe her. Not if she was queer. Not if she was a woman of color. Not if she was seeking asylum. Not if she was your partner. Not if she was disabled. Not if the victim was male.

SOME FACTS ABOUT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

  • Every 9 seconds, a woman is beaten according to the FBI. With every passing minute, 3 more women are beaten.
  • 40% of women are murdered at the hands of husbands or boyfriends.
  • 75% of abusers experienced or witnessed abuse while they were growing up.
  • 44% of victims are under the age of 18.
  • 60% of sexual assaults are NOT reported to police.
  • Approximately 22/3 of assaults are commited by someone known to the victim.

Domestic violence is against the law in North Carolina (NC General Statutes Chapter 50 B).

Victims of domestic violence have the right to take legal action to end the abuse.

  • Hold the abuser accountable by reporting the abuse to authorities.
  • File for a restraining order, for your safety and protection.
  • Speak to a domestic violence advocate about your options.
